Megami Ibunroku Persona

A modern corporation's work opening doors to other dimensions has had the unintended consequence of making our world vulnerable to demons from beyond. In Persona, a role-playing game set in the contemporary age of cities and AK-47s rather than one of castles and broadswords, a group of teenagers is working to stop the havoc brought by the invading demons. Your characters gain experience for fighting, but they also gain by not fighting; talking your way out of battle adds to your ability to use magic, which adds to your assets when the gloves really have to come off.

Which Version Should I Play?

There are two main versions of the first Persona game accessible to Western audiences:

  • Revelations: Persona is an official translation of the original Playstation game for overseas audiences, featuring an infamously bizarre localization that must be seen to be believed. In addition, the Snow Queen Quest route of the game was not implemented due to time constraints. This version offers the original soundtrack and an audiovisual ambiance closer to the original game. It is available for Playstation and can be found here.

  • Shin Megami Tensei: Persona is an enhanced rerelease/port of the original game for PSP. This version boasts restored content such as the cut SQQ route, as well as a more faithful translation, gameplay tweaks, and a brand new soundtrack which may or may not be more to one's taste. Please note that there is a patch that restores as much of the original music as possible (see below), which may enhance your experience with this version of the game. It is available for the Playstation Portable and can be found here.

Although Shin Megami Tensei: Persona is a safer bet between the two versions, they both bring something to the table, so just try them out!

Megami Ibunroku Persona FAQ

  • This page has a bunch of great stuff, so check it out.
  • Max out DEX and get Megido.
  • Unless the enemy will absorb or reflect it, always use your personas. When they level up, ALL of their stats go up.
  • If you want to go on the much harder Snow Queen Quest, and completely alternate quest, make sure you talk to everybody at school every single time you're there. Visit every room and talk to everyone. Twice.
  • The best 5th party member is Reiji, but you have to talk to everybody, including his mother at the mall before the real game starts, and you have to encounter him in front of SEBEC and at the abandoned factory at specific times. If you don't have him by the end of the school dungeon, you messed up.
  • Mediarama and regular Medicine will last you well past half way through the game
  • If you get into the lost forest dungeon, save your game on an alternate slot. Trust me on this.
  • Fill out every space on your map and fight everything you encounter to make sure you're leveled up.
